October, 2005:

I have been a huge palm enthusiast ever since I lived in Florida. I left Florida in 1979, but I still am fascinated with palms. So I planted my first palm in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1995. I only gave it protection the first few years, and that was only mulching it. Otherwise, it has survived temperatures to around 0 degrees Fahrenheit on many occasions, and also has been buried in 3 feet of snow. It has grown considerably, and I am quite proud of it. The palm now measures 60 inches tall and around 80 inches wide from tip of frond to tip of frond. I might try the sabal minor palm next year.
