Zip Files and the Year 2000

If you're like most BG-Map and BG-BASE users, you probably have
at least one, and probably several copies of PKZIP and PKUNZIP
residing on your hard drive. These indispensable tools are used
to compress (Zip) and decompress (Unzip) data, making it easier
and faster to transfer and store. But, did you know that some
versions are not Year 2000 compliant?

Currently, there are two major suppliers of Zip File compression
software:

PKWARE, Inc. - the originators of the Zip File and the makers of
PKZIP and PKUNZIP - website: www.pkware.com

Nico Mak Computing, Inc. - makers of WinZip software, which is
Zip File compatible - website: www.winzip.com

According to PKWARE, Inc., the following products ARE NOT Year
2000 compliant:
    PKZIP for Windows (versions 2.01 - 2.50)
PKZIP for Windows Version 2.60 (released December 19, 1997)
PKZIP for DOS (versions 1.10 - 2.04g) and PKZIP for OS/2
      (versions 1.09 - 1.11)
    PKZMENU (all versions)

According to PKWARE, Inc., the following products ARE Year 2000
compliant:
PKZIP for Windows (version 2.60 and later, all platforms)
PKZIP for DOS (versions before 1.10) and OS/2 (versions
      before 1.09)
PKZIP Command Line for OS/2 (version 2.50 and
     later)
PKZIP Command Line for Windows 95/NT (version 2.50 and later,
      all platforms)
PKZIP Command Line for UNIX (version 2.50 and later, all
      platforms)
PKUNZIP for DOS and OS/2 (all versions,
      including Junior version)
    PKZIP for OpenVMS (all versions)
    PKARC/PKXARC (all versions)
    PKPAK/PKUNPAK (all versions)
    PKLITE (all versions)
    PKZFIND/PKZOOM (all versions)
    PKZIPFIX (all versions)
    PKSFX

For more details, check PKWARE's Year 2000 compliance statement
at www.pkware.com/year2000.html

According to Nico Mak Computing, Inc., the following products ARE
Year 2000 compliant:

    WinZip 7.0
    WinZip 6.3
    WinZip Self-Extractor 2.1

Although not specifically listed, assume that any WinZip products
other than those listed above are NOT Year 2000 compliant.

For more details, check Nico Mak's Year 2000 compliance statement
at www.winzip.com/xyear2k.htm

Don't wait... Make certain that you replace all non-compliant Zip
File software soon.

Use an Unlicensed Copy of AutoCAD? - Beware!

If you're thinking of using an unlicensed copy of AutoCAD, beware
that it's not only illegal but can also be brutally expensive!
The following article appeared in the December'98/January '99
Issue of CAD Dealer, a U.K. - based magazine and is reprinted
here with permission:

Autodesk Settles $135,000 Piracy Case Against a Californian
Company

Autodesk has settled a software piracy case against General
Precision, Inc. (GPI), an environmental control systems
manufacturer based in Valencia, California. GPI agreed to
purchase enough AutoCAD software licenses to bring the company
into compliance with copyright laws, and pay Autodesk a fine for
past infringement. CPI will pay $120,000 in fines plus the cost
of software, for a total settlement of more than
$135,000.

In July, a U.S. District Court judge from the Central District of
California issued an order allowing the U.S. Marshal's office to
execute a search at GPI's offices. The result confirmed that GPI
had only one legal copy of AutoCAD Release 14 software.
Investigators found twelve unauthorized copies of Release 14 and
six copies of AutoCAD Release 12. In addition to the cash
settlement, GPI will also implement a company policy against
unauthorized software duplication and sign a Software Code of
Ethics confirming its internal enforcement procedures.

BG-Map Highlighted Feature - Plant List Export

When using the new version 4.5 of BG-Map, you may have noticed a
little check box labeled "Export to Text File" in the Plant List
section of the "Generate" Window. This little box provides you
with some powerful capabilities. It allows you to create a text
version of the plant list that accompanies large format maps -
Quadrants, Defined Views, and Site Maps. The exported text can
be imported into other documents - reports, newsletters, even web
pages.

How to use Plant List Export? When generating a map, select the
plant list format and sort order that you want and check the
"Plant List Export Box". A copy of the plant list will be placed
in the file c:\bgmapwin\export.txt on your local hard drive. To
place the text into a word-processing document, in this case
Microsoft Word, just click the "Insert" menu, and then click
"File". Use the file select dialog to select files of type "Text
(*.txt)" and then select the file c:\bgmapwin\export.txt. The
text will be inserted into your document - just like in the
following example:

Acc. No. Botanical Name Common Name(s) Family Name Range

If the columns don't line up, change the font for the imported
plant list to a non-proportional font, such as Courier or
MonoTxt.
